Liam and Matt's Presentation

Here's Liam and Matt's work - again one video extract is unavilable here but the points and comparison are still very useful.

The next two videos go together - they're about Stansted

and finally, the presentation!

Angela's Presentation

Here are Angela's Presentation and videos. Ch4 first...

This is the BBC version but I have had to substitute (the 'real' video version is on tape and I will upload it in due course). This will give you a flavour of what Angela is saying in her presentation

and finally the presentation

Emma's Space Shuttle Feedback

Here's my 10 points of feedback/stuff I've learnt:
1. Writing a script is HARD!
2. Fitting the script to the visulas with teh right speed talking is EVEN HARDER!
3. The news story often gives brief details to the story rather than anything too detailed, even though a lot of information is provided to make the story with
4. Live footage is most valuable to the story
5. Working in pairs made it harder because there was less creativity, groups of 3 or 4 might have been better & everyone should have had to have recorded a script, not just one of the pair
6. News stories are told to fit the broadcaster's image, so can vary between different channels
7. News continually changes which makes the news a fast paced place to be working
8. News anchors/presenters/correspondants do more work than just read out a script, they have to write it themselves, which I assume would be hard in a war zone...
9. Live footage causes the most problems on a broadcast when signals are lost etc, yetit's still number one in terms of content
10. Informing the audience is a top priority

Barnes:Space Shuttle

Some learning point and hopefully helpful feedback from the activity:

  1. It made me realise how concise News script writing should be.
  2. It proved to me that the story's content is very small and there is infact much more information which is left out from the news sources.
  3. It highlighted how little time the News teams would have to construct a new news story between each broadcast. -(many needed on the job)
  4. The house style and mode of address are crucial to the way in which an audience will percieve the news.- IT IS NOT A TRUE WINDOW ON THE WORLD
  5. It showed importance of using many mediums, -photos, videos, interviews, and main anchor presenting. To sustain audience interest and provide the sense of infotainment
  6. It proved that it is a demanding and everychanging job -and fun at the same time
  7. Timing is a big issue and needs to be exact so as to make it easy viewing and shows the professionalism of the News team.
  8. It shows the dependence on the news sources to provide good content
  9. I think it would have worked better if we were given a stricter time limit with a larger group of people as ths would have been a more realistic experience.
  10. ^^^this should have been done with more insight into how it is actually done. something like watching how professionals do this may have been beneficial before we had our own try.
  11. overall i liked the experience and think it definately showed me the many issues that a news team are faced with.

Links to help you with the debates...

If you're interested in finding out more about marxism and media, I suggest you go here

If you want to understand more about Marxist Writers/Thinekrs; Althusser, Gramsci, Stuart Hall etc etc then you can go through the link above or click here

These sites are on the Aberystwyth University Site and although they are aimed at undergraduates, the articles written by Daniel Chandler are aimed at new students and are therefore clear, basic and concise. An ideal place to start.

Your other alternative is Wikipedia but there isn't always a media bias on the explanations given about the writers/philosophers and so you get an overview of everything they think.

If you get stuck or have any questions, just ask me :-)

Latest work for Dec 08

Here’s what you need to do – a lot of which you may have completed already but if you haven’t, then this is your chance to catch up…

1. Look through last week’s catch up sheet (also available on scribd through the blog) and make sure you’ve done it all
2. Make sure you have posted your shuttle voice-over on Fronter – ask anyone in 13D if you can’t remember how…Emma and Angelie you need to do yours again as your file is saved but there is no sound…was the mike on? Soundcard in the pc?
3. For 13C only, either upload onto Fronter (same place as Shuttle files – you’ll see a ‘hand in’ folder in the A Level Media A2 THR named appropriately) or email to me at mrstmedia your 800 word piece on Scheduling/Actuality. (13D, make sure yours are ready for Friday!!)
4. Prepare for your presentations on the 11 Dec 08
5. NEW WORK

Read through Section 3 of your pack and highlight/make notes
BUT
NOT pages 3.1, 3.2, 3.20, 3.28 & 3.29

You should DO 3.18/3.19

FINALLY

Get ready for next lesson
a. make sure you’re all up to date
b. Don’t forget to watch the youtube files
c. Make sure you now have notes on TWO different days of news reports (2 channels minimum per day)

YOU NEED TO BE READY BECAUSE NEXT LESSON WE WILL BE BEGINNING A SERIES OF CLASS DEBATES THAT WILL RELY ON YOUR HAVING COMPLETED THIS WORK

Catch up checkpoint at end of Nov 08

Year 13 D/C
Catching up on what we’ve covered so far in NEWS

1.    Initially you should have read through the pages on the History of News and you should have made notes. (VIDEOS Available you should watch.)
2.    We looked at Section One of your packs – you should have notes on the conventions of news with analysis of the various opening sequences of different news broadcasts (1.3) and a comparison of the presenters on BBC and SKY news (1.11). You should have also applied the FOUR key concepts to NEWS (1.1). You should have started watching some broadcasts on your own to analyse them and the sheets 1.13 to 1.17 are there to assist you should you need some pointers/structure.
3.    In Section Two we looked at News sources and where news actually comes from. You should have listed the stories on page 2.4 in order of importance and then applied the NEWS VALUES to them. We discussed News Values and you should be completing a CARTOON version of HARCUP & O’NEILL’s updated News Values. You should have read through the notes in this section.
4.    You have started making notes on 17 Nov 08 BBC 6pm Broadcast and this should be finished in your own time.
5.    You will be working on constructing your own script of the SHUTTLE story and this must be posted onto FRONTER.
6.    Finally you must post 10 Bullet points on your reflection on the SHUTTLE activity onto misty’s everything news blog (on Latymer Media’s Blog).

As a pair/group, you will have been allocated the following task to be completed and PRESENTED at a special presentation session on THURSDAY 11th DEC 08, at 12.30. Refreshments will be provided. It should include a power point with moving images. Your images can be digitised from VHS should you need them BUT you must give us sufficient time to complete the process.

The Presentation:

Choose TWO stories (news items) to analyse. You should focus on the story’s presentation in detail on TWO channels  (same day, similar time). This means a DETAILED analysis of everything – the language used, the VTs, VOX POPS, Graphics, The presenters, the news agenda for the day, the time broadcast, the channel’s identity, the length and you should COMPARE it with the same news item on a different channel. You should comment on implications of word choices, the point of view presented, the ideologies and ideas behind the ‘representation’ of the story.

You can CHOOSE the TWO stories and the TWO Channels.
Example;        *STORY        CHANNEL    Time    Date           *
            21bn Tax Gamble    BBC        6pm    25 Nov 08
